A lakeside caravan, twelve paces from the water
Two bedrooms and a wide deck on the quiet shore of Low Birk Tarn, in the south Lakes. Privately owned, and booked directly with us.
The front row, and the last pitch before the trees
You wake up, slide the doors open and the tarn is simply there, with nothing between you and it but a strip of shingle.
Low Birk is a small, owners-only park of forty caravans with no clubhouse and no amusements. People come for the water, the fells and the quiet.
Ours is a 2022 model, 38 feet by 12, with central heating and double glazing, so it is as good in late November as it is in June.

Lake end The lounge
A deep corner sofa faces the water, not the television. There is a TV, tucked in the corner, but most evenings the binoculars get more use. Electric stove and central heating Maps, bird book and binoculars
Middle Kitchen and table
A full-size oven, a four-ring hob and a fridge-freezer, because walkers eat properly. The table seats four and looks into the birches. Flasks, lunch boxes and a slow cooker Tea, coffee, oil and salt provided
Far end The main bedroom
A king-size bed with a pocket-sprung mattress, made up with cotton linen before you arrive. Fitted wardrobes and its own toilet and basin. Linen and towels included Blackout blinds
Outside The lakeside deck
Thirty feet of deck along the water side with two loungers, a table for four and a gas fire-pit table for the evenings. A gate keeps dogs on board. Lockable store for bikes and boards Outdoor tap and boot scraper
A small park with the right three things
No arcade, no evening entertainment and no passes to buy. Everything below is free to guests of the caravan.
The jetty and boats
Two rowing boats and four kayaks for residents, with buoyancy aids in every size. Launch your own paddleboard from the shingle by our deck.
The boathouse shop
Bread at eight, papers, milk, local eggs, gas-bottle swaps and a very good bacon roll. Open every morning in season, weekends in winter.
The woodland trail
A half-mile loop through the pines with balance logs, a rope bridge and a den-building clearing. Red squirrels at the feeders if you are early.Good to know: the park gate is coded and closes to cars at 10pm. There is one parking space beside the caravan and an overflow car park at the entrance for a second car.

We watched an osprey fish from the sofa on the first morning and did not put the television on once in four days.
Warm as toast in November. The heating was on when we arrived and the bed is better than ours at home.
Booking direct with Graham was easy and he could not have been more helpful about where to launch the kayaks.

Arriving and leaving
In from 4pm with a key safe by the door; out by 10am. The park gate code comes with your confirmation.
Dogs
Two well-behaved dogs at £20 each per break. Leads on around the park, please. The shore path is off-lead heaven.
What to bring
Very little. Linen, towels, heating and wifi are all in the price. Bring boots, waterproofs and your own buoyancy aid if you have one.
Winter stays
The park closes from 5 January to the end of February. The caravan is fully winterised and open every other week of the year.
The kettle is by the window. The window is by the lake.
